On November 23, 2023, Darmasiswa students from Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) embarked on an enriching journey to Bromo Mountain. Beyond its scenic allure, the trip aimed to elevate language skills and immerse participants in the rich culture of the Tengger community.

Tasked with creating interview videos, students engaged with a minimum of three locals, challenging their Bahasa Indonesia’s skill and exploring the culture of the Tengger people. The name “Bromo” itself is derived from “Brahma”, the revered god for the predominantly Hindu Tengger people. This cultural backdrop added depth to the students’ understanding as they interacted with the locals, turning Bromo into an outdoor classroom.

The itinerary unfolded with a pre-dawn experience of Bromo’s magical sunrise, casting a golden glow over the rugged landscape. The breathtaking sight left an indelible mark on the participants, setting the tone for the day. Thrilling 4-wheel drive Jeep rides and horseback excursions allowed students to navigate Bromo’s challenging terrain while immersing themselves in the local way of life.

The highlight of the trip was witnessing Bromo’s awe-inspiring crater, a geological marvel showcasing the earth’s raw power. During the trip, the students’ excitement was noticeable, not only making the learning atmosphere lively but also building a friendly bond among the participants.

The blend of linguistic practice, cultural exploration, and thrilling activities turned the trip into a holistic educational experience. As the students returned to ITS, they carried with them not just enhanced language skills but also a profound appreciation for the cultural nuances embedded in Bromo’s landscapes and the warm conversations with its people.

In conclusion, the ITS Darmasiswa Field Trip to Bromo Mountain was a successful fusion of education and adventure. The trip’s short duration did not reflect its significant influence, offering students an opportunity to grow linguistically, culturally, and personally. Bromo Mountain, with its natural wonders and cultural depth, became a transformative classroom, leaving students with lasting memories of an unforgettable journey.
